Is a site with a unique prospective on what is seen through our eyes when it comes to visiting old abandoned, derelict places. It is also there to catch local history and historic places while they still stand.
Opening in 1950 Lake Alice was the first psychiatric hospital in the Manawatu-Wanganui area. Catering for all sort of mental illness from young to criminally insane to geriatric. The hospital slowly shut down during the mid 90's as apart of merging patients back into the community. After the closure in 1999 the hospital lay abandoned for 10 years and was on sold twice before the decision was made that the buildings would slowly be demolished, At this stage all the old Villas still stand. Lake Alice was home to the Child and Adolescent Unit which has caused more controversy then any other Health case in the country when past patients sued the government in 2001 for abuse such as physical and sexual as well as Electric shock therapy that was unmodified. They received ex Gratia payments as at the time they were under the states care and the treatments used where found inhumane. Lake Alice's history spans from the Whistle blowing incident that changed NZ work place policy's when in the 1980's a Staff member of the Maximum Security unit spoke out about the poor treatmeant and abuse that was going on towards patients in the unit. The website also covers extensive photo galleries which are not available anywhere else.
The theme of Urban Explorers is Urban exploration which is the definition of pretty much what where all about. It's all in the exploring and enjoying these abandoned, unseen places whether it be a hospital, tunnel or old house. We wont let them be forgotten...
